After 4 years of planning, there is a lot of activity in our greenspace! Unfortunately, the demolition of the old playground began before school was out and not as planned in July. If your kids are sad to see the old playground gone, please tell them that the Emmanuel Foundation recycled parts of it to build a playground in a third world country.
We are installing naturalized play feature that are half the price and twice the fun as traditional playground equipment. We are still fundraising, so please consider making a donation or volunteering on the project committee.
This summer will see the playground completed and many features that seniors and people with disabilities told us they would like to make the park a welcoming space for them: smooth pathways, wheelchair accessible tables and seating under shade. We are also creating an outdoor entranceway to the hall and installing a giant community picnic table!
If you go by the school, you can see that the school courtyard project, where the old parking lot used to be, is also underway. Trees, stump seating and raised beds are now in place.
Our rink is used year round - kids play soccer in the spring and the Holyrood Daycare uses it for games all summer long. We are dismayed to find dog poop over and over again. Please pick up after your dog and don’t ruin the privilege to use the rink. Also, to all the responsible dog owners out there, please consider putting extra plastic bags in the dispenser by the rink gate. The City of Edmonton does not support the use of public parks, school grounds and rinks for dog off leash use, therefore no bags are provided for this purpose. If this continues to be a problem the rink will be locked to dog owner use.

We need your help to build Holyrood’s New Playground!
Our community needs to raise $30,000 to cover the cost of the new playground. With sufficient donations we can also build an environmentally-friendly water feature next year.

We are breaking ground to build our new playground and plaza this summer. We have raised $600K of the $900K project budget through grants. What we are asking from Holyroodians is a collective community contribution of $28,000.00 to ensure we get an environmentally-friendly water feature. So let us have some fun achieving this goal and join us on February 6 for a Robbie Burns Night and February 14 for Family Day.
For three years we held meetings, open houses and conducted surveys. Kevin Dieterman, a talented landscape designer who lives in Holyrood, donated his expertise to put these ideas on paper in a concept drawing. The committee received an Outstanding Project Team award from the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues for this work. We then received a grant from the City so that we could hire Kevin to turn his concepts into construction drawing for the City to work from.
The school community also built a mosaic bench at the front of the school as a memorial to friends we have lost. The school received national recognition from the Evergreen Foundation. The new courtyard at the school will be landscaped this summer to create a natural learning environment for all.
Picking up on our vibe, Researchers from the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services selected Holyrood for an intergenerational study of what amenities make neighbourhoods walkable and age-friendly.
The Southeast Edmonton Seniors Centre and our very successful elementary school have both expanded and are great community partners in this project. The Greater Edmonton Housing Authority for Seniors, The Holyrood Extendicare and the group home for people with disabilities all contributed to the design of our new park. In an age when many people do not know their neighbours, this is truly a great neighbourhood to grow up in and grow old in. Consider making a contribution to our project and help us leave a legacy for years to come.
DONATIONS OVER $25.00 ARE ELIGIBLE FOR AN OFFICIAL TAX RECEIPT.
